The Five Rules of Weed is a trippy dark comedy with musical moments, fast cuts, and a feel-good happy ending about two college students who want to try weed for the first time after it is legalized in Canada.

10-minute short film. Parental warning: Violence, frightening scenes and drug use.

Behind the Scenes Details

The Five Rules of Weed was created by Derick Campbell and filmed by students from the Recording Arts Institute of Saskatoon. Cast and crew credits are on IMDb.

It was filmed on a Blackmagic Design Production Camera 4k and a Panasonic LUMIX G85, with some brief shots (underwater, thrown, and spinning) filmed on a 4K APEMAN Action Camera.

Filming was done at two main locations: The Pot Shack (amazing people - please support them) and my home.

Editing, visual effects, color correction and grading, basic sound, and delivery encoding were done with DaVinci Resolve 15. I've written some DaVinci Resolve Tips in the Blog.

Advanced sound editing plus Stereo and 5.1 surround audio deliveries were done by Jazmyn using Pro Tools.

End credits and some graphic imagery and web page mockups were done with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint and Word) and Microsoft Paint.

Screen recordings were done with Screencastify.

DCP-o-matic was used to create the projection DCP used at The Roxy. DaVinci Resolve was used to encode all YouTube and Facebook deliveries.

Music was licensed via Soundstripe and AudioSocket.

Marketing posters were done with Adobe Spark.
